RE: Festivals of Light

This half term our RE topic is Festivals of Light and we will be learning abour Diwali, Hanukkah and Advent.

Over the last two weeks we have learnt the Hindu story of Rama and Sita, why light is such an important part of their story and the meaning of light in the festival of Diwali. We have learnt how families celebrate Diwali and made our own Rangoli patterns.

Anti bullying week

In anti-bullying week, Year 1 learnt about what bullying is and what they can do if they or someone else is being bullied. They identified key people that they can talk to if they are feeling unhappy. On Odd Socks day, Year 1 celebrated our individual differences and how our likes/dislikes make up special. We then created our own socks to celebrate how wonderful we are!

Autumn Leaves and Phonics Fun

This week in Year 1 the children have been really enjoying collecting lots of Autumn leaves and describing their colours. In Writing, we have been working hard with our phonics and practising our writing by working together to unscramble sentences, identifying key features such as capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.

Bread investigation update!

In Year 1, we have been watching closely to see which slice of bread develops the most mold. So far, in the Swifts class, the......CLASSROOM TABLES slice has developed the most mold. This has informed lots of discussions about the importance of handwashing to keep ourselves healthy.

Our bread investigation!

In Science, we have been investigating how germs spread. We have touched a slice of bread with washed hands, unwashed hands and placed it on a classroom table. We have displayed the slices of bread in our classroom and we are going to observe them over the next week to see which slice of bread becomes the mouldiest. After a discussion about the importance of hand washing, we hypothesised that the 'washed hands' condition would develop the least mould. We shall watch with eagle eyes to see if our hypothesis is correct....

Welcome to Year 1!

The first few weeks in Year 1 have been filled with lots of exciting learning!

We commenced our year with an intriguing visit from a....tiger! We read 'The tiger who came to tea' , learnt and innovated the narrative. We loved thinking of our own animals that could visit for tea. We have been thinking a lot about how we can use adjectives to make our descriptions more interesting.

In our marvellous maths lessons, we have been learning about the numbers to 10. We can now use inequality signs and the vocbaulary of 'more than' and 'less than' to compare numbers.

Learning all about our amazing bodies has been lots of fun! We really enjoyed practically investigating our senses. In particular,  using our sense of taste to correctly identify the crisp flavour .
