Thank you for visiting our school website.
We are a friendly, happy and successful school, serving the diverse community of Chesterton. Our pupils come from a wide variety of backgrounds and many speak English as an additional language. We are a highly inclusive place of learning and are very proud to be the first school in the country to gain the Equalities Award.
We look carefully at the development of the ‘whole child’, and through a broad, balanced and exciting curriculum, with a focus on key skills, we aim to give children the best possible start in life. All children have huge potential, and we want our pupils to enjoy learning, achieve the highest possible standards, develop their curiosity and improve those skills that will help them now and in later life.
We promote an ethos where every child is valued as an individual; this helps them to grow into caring and respectful young people who are able to get on well with each other and make a positive contribution to our community.
Our building was purpose-built in 2011 and our spacious, light building has a well-resourced Library, Food Tech Room, ICT Suite, two halls, outdoor learning spaces (including an allotment), community rooms and a Children’s Centre.
Shirley Community Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and we expect all staff, parents and volunteers to actively share this commitment. Our Designated Persons for Safeguarding are myself, Mrs Wernham (Deputy Head and SENCO), Mrs Mitchell (Deputy Head), Mrs Taylor (Class Teacher), Mrs Willis, Ms. (Senior Inclusion TA), Ms. Reay (Family Inclusion Officer) and Mrs Kozicz (Extended Schools Manager).
Ofsted visited us in March 2018 and while they were visiting, children commented that ‘this is a good school because people make you feel welcome’. Parents also shared that ‘this is a truly inclusive school that does its best for all pupils, whatever their background, culture or ability’.
Visits to the school are always welcome – we look forward to meeting you!

* * * HOT SCHOOL MEALS * * *
It is good to see the children enjoying having hot school meals again. We hope that as many children as possible will join in having a tasty, hot meal at school with their classmates every day, especially now that the weather is turning cooler. Please click here
for more information.
Thank you to everyone for their patience and understanding regarding the opening and closing of school at different times. We have reviewed our procedures and feel that there is no longer the need for such a large dropping off and collecting window, nor for such a large gap between the two sessions. As things have embedded in well it is now sensible to move to shorter times, especially with the weather turning colder, and mornings/afternoons becoming darker. We are reducing opening and drop off times from 15 minutes to 10 minutes, and the time the gates are closed from 10 minutes to 5 minutes.
From Monday 12th October, our Opening and Closing Times will be as follows:
Opening and Drop Off
Even: EYFS/Y2/Y4/Y6: 8:45 to 8:55am
Gates closed: 8:55 to 9:00am
Odd: Y1/Y3/Y5 9:00 to 9:10am
Closing and Collection
Even: EYFS/Y2/Y4/Y6 3:00 to 3:10pm
Gates closed: 3:10 to 3:15pm
Odd: Y1/Y3/Y5 3:15 to 3:25pm
We continue to follow all of the latest COVID guidance and our systems of cleaning the school throughout the day, as well as ensuring there is plenty of hand washing at key times, continue to operate well. Children are learning well in their bubbles, and only mixing with children in their year groups at break and lunch times. Again, we are pleased with how this is working, and this will continue to be the case until any changes to the Government guidance.
