Physical Education (PE)
PE in the curriculum
At Shirley we believe that physical activity is key to helping children not only keep healthy but grow to become confident individuals. Exercise is vital for a healthy and happy life and our aim is to provide the children with an exciting and supportive environment, in which an enjoyment for physical activity lasts forever. We have our two indoor halls as well as an outdoor Multi Use Games Area and large field where pupils enjoy participating in sport and improve their control and coordination through dance and gymnastics. In KS2 we take children off-site to Parkside Swimming Pool where they learn the vital life skill of swimming from qualified instructors. We also take part in regular sports festivals through our School Sports Partnership with Manor Community College. Additionally, throughout the year, children are identified for our Co-ordin8 club; a before-school club to improve children’s motor skills.
We believe that PE develops a range of vital skills and during the lessons we are always working towards our IPC ‘Personal Goals’, encouraging the children to:

- Cooperate
- Enquire
- Communicate
- Be adaptable
- Show respect
- Be resilient
- Show Morality
- Be thoughtful
To do this we make sure that the pupils have two PE lessons a week and the curriculum has a diversity of sports and activities in all year groups. Our expectation is that all children take part in all the curriculum activities and also have the correct PE kit.
Extra-curricular PE
In addition to our class PE lessons, there are lots of other opportunities for our children to take part in sports at school. Each term children in KS2 are involved in intra-school sports competitions such as the House Football tournaments, Cross Country event and Sports Day. Children from each house are encouraged to take part in these to earn house points, and the House Captains help to organise teams for some of the events. After-school sports clubs, such as the football clubs, are also popular. Our Year 5 and 6 football team currently play in an inter-school football league against other schools in the Chesterton area. Our clubs change regularly; over the year we have clubs for football, rugby, hockey, cricket, netball and 'multi-sports'.
