Wednesday 24th June-Year 5 School Bubble

We've been trying to brighten up the bubble classroom we're working in, and we've started with these hedgehogs with leaves and accompanying snails for them to eat.

This is going to be part of a wider display. You'll see the display when it's finished.

Tuesday 23rd June-Year 5 Home Learning

Delighted to share an excellent piece of Home Learning from Hapi in 5WM!

He discovered a dead beetle close to a nearby pond, and used a bug identity app to identify the species.

He then draw a small illustration of the insect, including measurements, and recorded the information from the app next to it.

Please share any creepy-crawly discoveries with me, as I would love to post them up!

Thursday 19th June-Year 5 Home Learning

Felix in 5CS has made a 'Walking Water' piece at home this week.

Four pots of coloured dye are placed with a piece of rolled paper towel dipped into them. The other end points into an empty glass.

Over time, the colour will soak into the towels, travel through them and eventually drain into the glass.
Wednesday 17th June-Year 5 School Bubble

We've been working to decorate our bubble classroom whilst we're learning. The latest contribution are these plate jellyfish.

All you need to make your own are some paper plates, a marker, some googly eyes and some coloured string.

Tues 16th June-Year 5 Home Learning

A fantastic piece of home learning from Bertie in 5WM.

Inspired by our work on Ancient Greek Democracy, he has formulated a set of laws for the house, a system of voting for what pudding to have after dinner, and even a postal voting system.

Well done!

Wedneday 3rd June

Recently, people have been suggesting that the Earth is flat.

But over 2, 000 years ago, a Greek mathematician called Eratosthenes managed to figure out that the Earth was round...and he only needed two big sticks.

Some Year 5 students carried out this experiment. They stuck two pencils in some card to represent the two big columns from Eratosthenes time.

Eratosthenes figured out that, if the Earth was flat, the shadows made by both sticks should be the same.

But if one stick has a shadow, and the other does not, then the surface of the Earth must be curved.

See the pictures below for the evidence.

Tuesday 2nd June
We have enjoyed seeing the endings you've written for 'The Game'! Keep the good ideas coming....

Here is an example.....

Susie blew on the board and a storm of dust went on to her face, determined, she wiped her face and read the rules.

To play this game you need more than two people and an item from your country.

Gather around and pick up the cards and let the magic flow.

“Magic?” said Danny “This is so fake”

“Shush, we’re not done yet,” Susie muttered, staring at him with cold eyes.

Read a card and run to a water source and touch it.

“So you're gonna touch the toilet?!”  Danny laughed

“Danny, stop, we can just use our water bottles, it doesn't matter…”

Run and hide from everyone but your group and behold.

Pick three numbers and clap that many times.

Write an X on your hand and feel the tingle.

“BORING”

“Leave if you want, but you'll be bored and alone…”

“Fine”

“Ok! Let's start!” Susie said with enthusiasm. “I’ll go first”

“Meh, fine by me”

Susie picked up the rusty cards and gave them a shake and shuffled them.

“I got leopard” She said, standing up and running to get a pencil and a poster.

She grabbed her bottle and speed walked to the cloak room and hid under her coat, Danny followed behind her,

He gave her a pen and she wrote an X on her hand.

A blinding light appeared and as it dimmed.

“Ah!” Danny screamed, you’re, you're, a- leopard girl!

It's Virtual Health Week!

Normally during the Summer term we have a ‘Health Week’ at Shirley School where we learn about how to keep our minds and bodies healthy. We don’t want you miss out on this important learning so we have decided to do a virtual health week instead! All of your Family Learning Menu activities this week are based on healthy lifestyles. You’ll be learning about mindfulness and well-being; the importance of physical exercise; how to eat well and why this is important as well as other important things. We can’t wait to see the work and ideas you send in for health week!

A message from us in Year 5...
Friday 1st May 2020

Well done for your super stories which have been arriving in our inboxes! Here are a few to inspire you.
Please keep the stories coming, and have a go at writing your stories in neat. I know some of you are planning to make a book or comic strip; don't forget to send us a picture!
Wednesday 18th March
Maths in Year 5

This week we have been learning about division and investigating statements about division.

Are these sometimes, always or never true?

Multiples of 4 are divisible by 8.
If you multiply an even number by 5, the result will be divisible by 2.
If you take a number where the last digit is 1 and divide it by 5, the answer will have a remainder of 1.

We have also been learning about prime numbers, factors, squared numbers and cubed numbers. We used the multi-link cubes to show how squared and cubed numbers are made and used our reasoning skills to discuss our ideas about the patterns we saw.
Thursday 5th March 2020
World Book Day!

Today we read the story of 'Puss in Boots' and acted in role as the cat. We explained how we tricked the King and the ogre, and enjoyed exploring the feelings of the characters! Have a look at our photos below.
Friday 14th February

Safety week!

This week was safety week so Year 5 have been learning about how to be safe. We talked about avoiding risk, assessing risk and managing risk as part of our PSHE lessons.

As part of our IPC topic, we are planning to launch rockets that we made out of junk materials. In order to do this, we bought a special rocket launcher which needs careful planning and risk assessment. We discussed what we could do to make this activity safe, what could go wrong and how we can get the most enjoyment - and fun - out of launching our rockets.

We also talked about staying safe on the internet, our online identity and why it is so important to be aware of what people know about us when we are online. We debated the statement "I can do whatever I want online and I can't get into trouble because it's my online identity talking and not me."

We also did some basic first aid and gained a good understanding of how we can keep ourselves and others safe or help others if they need it.

PICTURES TO FOLLOW!
Friday 7th February

Spelling is all about practice, and Year 5 have been working hard for their spelling tests each week.

This week has been looking at some of the hardest English spellings to remember...words with ie and ei!

It used to taught 'I before E, except after C'. But we did a little digging, and we found 'neighbour and science'! Can you think of other words that break this rule?

There are, according to the Oxford English dictionary, 923 words which break this rule...
Thursday 23rd January 2020

We love playing games to help our learning in year 5!
Today, we sorted lots of facts into whether we thought they were true, false, or whether we were unsure. We then had to explain our reasoning based on what we already know or things we have heard.
There are lots of things we would like to find out about space!
Fri 17th January 2020

This week, we've been learning how to value decimal numbers with a new board game we have invented.

Called 'Know Your Place', players must get from one whole number to the other up a ladder of decimal places. But how fast?

The spinner decides whether you dash quickly up the tenths with one decimal place, or inch your way forward on the hundredths with two decimal places.

Every place you land on, you have to write what decimal number you've arrived at.

If you're right, you stay...if you're wrong, and someone spots it...back you go!
Tuesday 7th January 2019

Welcome back! Our new topic will be Space Explorers! We are looking forward to finding out exciting facts and doing fantastic experiments this term. Check out the website below for super information and whizzy facts.

On Monday 20th January, we will need lots of junk modelling materials to make rockets! Please bring in any clean packaging such as pringles tubes or similar, cling film tubes, cereal sized boxes or smaller or plastic bottles.
Friday 13th December 2019

Today is 5WM's class assembly! We will be talking about the process of making our poetry book, 'The Found Words'. As we will explain in our assembly, we used all of our research from 'What a Wonderful World' this term to help us write fantastic poems. Here are some photos of the highlights of our topic this term.
