Here is a video from Mrs Bane introducing the home learning for this week. We are going to be looking at a new story 'After the Storm' and some number problems in maths. Please keep sending photos of your learning to the class email account.

On Wednesday at school we were very excited to see that a butterfly had hatched out of each chrysalis we had made and was ready to fly! We have been doing lots of things outside too, like learning how to play rounders and collecting things in the garden to make a beautiful bookmark. We are enjoying finding out about summer at Shirley School.

Here are some home learning tasks we have been sent this week. We have been writing our own animal hunt stories, using number bonds and telling the time. Please keep sending in pictures of your learning.

This week at school, we have been learning all about the life cycle of a ladybird. We found out that a ladybird is an insect because it has 6 legs, 3 body parts and has an exoskeleton (an outer skeleton). We created our own ladybirds and even found some in the nature area. Some children from the 1B bubble found a cocoon. We're going to keep an eye on it to see which creature will hatch from it!

Here are some of the home learning tasks that we have received so far this week. We have enjoyed seeing your new animal hunt story plans based on 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt!' and are looking forward to reading the finished stories. There are also some more examples of coin activities.

At school, Year 1 have been reading the story We're going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen. We went on our own bear hunt around the school field! We also created our own sound effects to add to the story using body percussion and musical instruments.

Year 1 have really enjoyed going on mini beast hunts in the Nature Area this week. Look at all the different creatures we found in the forest, under the logs and in the pond!

At school today, our Year 1 bubbles have been working hard on their phonics by studying the 'oa' sound. We also enjoyed reading the story of Sayeeda the Pirate Princess. We completed a quiz all about the story and we enjoyed reenacting the story and drawing pictures of our favourite parts.

We have received some great home learning which has been lovely to see. Children have enjoyed creating their own dragons and reading a new exciting pirate story. In maths we have been looking at arranging numbers in arrays.
Monday 15th June 2020
Today we started our new topic, Summer At Shirley School. We are going to have lots of fun exploring our school environment and taking every opportunity to be outside. Using the garden, field, nature area and playgrounds we will be naming plants and animals, looking at life cycles and the structure of animals. We will be minibeast hunting and pond dipping and exploring seasonal changes. To kick start our topic we made some imaginary minibeasts. See the photos below.

Today in Year 1 we were making faces out of playdough to show how we were feeling. We were learning about different emotions and how to read people's emotions.

At school today, the Year 1 bubbles had a lovely surprise when Miss Harris and Ms Cleland popped up on their screens and read them the story of Slinky Malinky Catflaps. We also had fun playing with play dough and the animals in our own little hoop bubbles.

We have enjoyed welcoming back some of our Year 1 children today. As we are learning safely within our "bubbles" we thought it would be fun to make some giant bubbles! Take a look at the fun we had today making enormous bubbles.

Please find below some examples of home learning sent in so far this week. In English we have looked at the story 'Tell Me a Dragon' and created some of our own dragon pictures. We have been counting in 2s in maths and also looking at number patterns. It's also great to see phonics activities being completed.

Please find examples of home learning sent in this week. The children have continued to work hard on their Phonics knowledge, sorting words into different sounds. In English, we have been looking at using the prefix un and using and in sentences. Other home learning is also being completed on different topics which is lovely to see as well.

Below is a video to welcome the 1A Bubble back to school. This bubble will be taught on Monday and Tuesday by Mrs Taylor, and on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday by Mrs Farrer. We look forward to seeing you all next week.

Some of the children at home have been writing their own stories. Here is one that was written and illustrated by a child in Year 1. They have also added a voiceover of them reading the story. Enjoy reading/listening!

This week, the children have been working in English on practising using capital letters and punctuation correctly. They have also been completing lots of Phonics work. Some children have made colourful posters for the Months of the Year (see picture below). The children have also been working on capacity in Maths and using household jugs, bowls etc to help them to describe and compare capacity. Other families have been completing work from the Family learning Menu, one example of this is the Bubble experiment with household items.

We hope that you've had a restful Easter break. We've enjoyed seeing your home learning contributions coming in again :) This week, the children have been working on doubling and sharing in Maths and creating story maps/ answering questioning about the story Sidney spider. We've also had some family learning sent in of lovely rainbows you've created and fruit smoothies. In addition, some families have been doing other work and it's lovely to see what you have been doing. The Chinese shadow puppet show is particularly enjoyable to watch, maybe you could create one of your own?

This week, in Maths we have been learning about more and less. The children have completed sheets thinking about which number comes before and next. They have also looked at different representations e.g. dienes.

What an exciting day we've had for World Book day dressed in our wonderful costumes. We have learnt more about the story Little Red Riding Hood. Here are some pictures of a few of our costumes.

Before half term, our focus was Safety week. During safety week, we read a story about Smartie the penguin who had received a tablet for his birthday. However things kept going wrong with his tablet for example some pop up adverts came up. We discussed what we'd do and drew pictures/ wrote a sentence. Here is some of our work.

In Phonics, we have been revisiting the split sounds a-e, u-e. We have played some phonics games. Your child may have bought home one of the words and pictures from the u-e matching game, please ask them to read the word to you or they could add the sound buttons and show to you.

This week, we have started our new topic Superhumans. We began the topic by completing our entry point which involved a senses walk around the school. We used our 5 senses and drew what we could smell, hear, touch, taste and feel. As part of our knowledge harvest, we drew around a child and wrote down what we know about the human body. In English, we have written letters to the Queen which will be sent next week, we hope to hear back from her about whether she will let us borrow her crown!

We really enjoyed our trip to see the Pantomime of Cinderella at Cambridge Arts Theatre. Today, we discussed our favourite scenes. One of them was the scene in the spa where the Ugly Sisters kept slipping and sliding around the stage. We thought that it was hilarious

We all had a lovely day with History off the page (and Lord Patrick) doing our Castles event. In the morning, we could choose which activities we wanted to do. These included making leather purses, making soap and pies. There was also some gossip being spread around the Castle about Steven and Matilda. In the afternoon, some children were learning how to be servitors, other children were practising plays, juggling and singing. After this, we held our banquet and enjoyed food and entertainment.

Today in Maths, we have been learning about the months of the year. We have sang the months of the year song and ordered the months of the year into the correct order. We loved singing the song! Please ask us to sing it at home. Some of us also talked about the timetable of the day.

This week it is anti bullying week, focusing on change starts with us. We have thought about how we can be good friends to others at breaktime, lunchtime and in class. Some of our ideas are playing kind with others, asking others to join in our games.

We practise our tricky words everyday in Year 1. We often use games on Phonics Play to help us to do this such as tricky word trucks which we love! Here is a picture of us using it.

This week, in English we have been looking at safety posters and today we created our own safety posters about how to stay safe on fireworks night. There are some really useful tips listed below!

This week, we have finished writing our Three Little Pigs innovated stories. Some of us have been writing captions for the wolf falling in the pot. Some of us have been writing our stories into our books using our success criteria. Our teachers are really impressed with our wonderful writing using the lines, take a look at some of it below!

This week, we have completed some Joe Wicks 5 minute classroom workout videos. We had to do a variety of exercises. Some were quite tricky!

This week, in our indoor forest school session we have been focusing on trees. We have done a variety of activities linked to trees such as leaf rubbing, leaf threading, making our own trees. Take a look below.

We have been focusing on the story of the Three Little pigs over the last few weeks. The children have retold the story brilliantly- please ask them to retell it to you at home! Some children have cut out and ordered events in the story during busy learning. They have all drawn their own innovated story maps by changing the story e.g. changing the animals.

This week in Maths we have been focusing on one more/one less. We have counted the number of cubes in towers and talked about what one more and one less would be. We have also used numicon to help us to see what one more and one less is. Some of us have been doing an extra challenge of finding some missing numbers using our knowledge of more and less.
