Early Years

In Nursery and Reception we deliver the Early Years and Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum.

Early Years practice is based around these principles:
A Unique Child + Positive Relationships + Enabling Environments = Learning and Development.

The curriculum is taught through hands on, practical activities with a balance between teacher led (guided) activities and structured play.

The curriculum is divided into:
  • Prime areas (Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language and Physical Development)
  • Specific areas (Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design).
Characteristics of learning: (Playing and Exploring, Active Learning and Creating and Thinking Critically) run through all areas of learning.

Phonics is taught daily following the Letters and Sounds scheme. We also learn the Jolly Phonics actions when teaching new sounds.
Both Reception classes take part in the Forest Schools, led by Nursery Nurse and Forest Leader Julie Chambers.
In Reception we base our topics on stories. We learn the stories really well which helps us think of ideas and write our own. We try to incorporate our story into all our areas of learning so that it is relevant, fun and pursposeful.
