Early Years Assessment

In the nursery and reception classes, teachers and teaching assistants make observations of pupils against the statements of the Early Years ‘Development Matters in the Early Years Foundation Stage’. This curriculum covers 7 main areas of learning and development. For more information on the curriculum, you are able to download it here.

Observations can be:

  • Photos

  • Examples of work completed by pupils

  • Listening to what a pupil has said

  • Observing what a pupil can do

These observations are recorded for each individual pupil and stored on the assessment program used by the school. The school also encourages parents and carers to contribute to their child’s Early Year’s profile by sending in observations they’ve made of their children at home.

 

At the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage, the expected standard is for a reception child to meet the ‘Early Learning Goal’ in each of the areas of learning and development.

 

Reporting

The school is required to send reception assessment data to the local authority at the start of the year and the end of the year.
