We are having a brilliant time learning about Pirates in Reception. We are learning lots about pirates from the past, making treasure maps, paper plate pirates, egg box treasure chests and lots of maths problem solving.
RSR enjoyed dressing up as pirates today and presenting their class assembly to their friends and family. Thank you for coming along and all your kind support.

This week, we have started our new topic on PIRATES. Yesterday, RSH dressed up as pirates during forest schools. In the afternoon, we made our own plank for some of the pirates to walk across, luckily no one fell in! Today, we have been making pirate maps by staining paper using teabags and we have been painting our egg boxes to turn into treasure chests. We are hoping to find some treasure this week to put inside them!

We've been having a great time in Reception this week. Lots of making superhero things, including superhero puppets, supertatos, superhero vehicles and masks. Super writing about our favourite characters. We've been enjoying playing outdoors too.
In our PSED lessons we have been talking about feelings and emotions and have been using feeling fans to show how we feel at different times. Ask your child about the different calming down strategies we have discussed in class. See if they can demonstrate these at home!?!

Before half term, we celebrated our Reception 'wedding' at St George's Church, Chesterton. Ruth Adams performed a lovely ceremony- thank you Ruth. The bride and groom exchanged haribo rings and signed the register, accompanied by the mothers of the bride and groom. All of the children watched the service and joined in with the singing beautifully. Thank you to all the adults that came, we had lots of guests which made the 'Wedding' even more special! Photos of the day are shown below!

Today, RSH got to go to Bramblefields nature reserve. It is our own part of Bramblefields that only Shirley primary school children can go to. You have to be careful because there are some stinging nettles though! We played games like tag in the forest/ hide and seek- there are lots of places there to hide. There was a tree for climbing, when we have an adult with us. The pond there is still very full. Miss Harris spotted a deer and we listened and we could hear it. Take a look at the photos of us beginning to explore Bramblefields.
Thursday 19th April
The highlight of today was making our own slime! We had great fun getting gooey and talked about what happened when we added the ingredients. We used our slime in our maths lesson to make blobs that doubled. We even got to take some home!
Friday 9th March 2018
We have had so much fun this week, with the highlight being our exciting trip to Shepreth Wildlife Park yesterday. We were so proud of all the children and the way that they behaved and the interest that they showed throughout the day. They have been enjoying talking about their experiences today and are in the process of creating a class book to tell you all about it. We hope they were able to tell you about the animals that they saw and the things that they learned.
Home learning will be given to children on Monday but if you want some activities to do this weekend then ask the children to recount their trip to Shepreth telling you what they did "First", "next" and "after that".
In maths we have been practising making estimations of the number of objects in a group/ pot/ bowl and then count the objects to find out the total to see how close their estimations were. You could estimate at home e.g. how many toys in a basket, how many step long the garden is etc.
Have a great weekend!
Friday 2nd March
Another busy week in Reception!
Our first trip to Bramblefields for Forest Schools went well on Tuesday. We have worked hard describing different animals and talking about similarities and differences.
We enjoyed our World Book Day on Thursday based on the book 'Fox in Socks' by Dr Seuss. We played in blue goo, wrote silly rhyming sentences, made a handprint fox in socks and decorated socks. Well done for coming to school in your amazing outfits - you all looked great!
Monday 5th February 2018
Thank you to all the friends and family who came to our Goldilocks café. The children really enjoyed cooking the food for you and serving you. There are lots of lovely order forms that the children wrote with your help. Please take a look at some of the photos from the café.
A big thank you to all the TA team, Mrs Dickson, Mrs Roe's Mum and Mrs Guy for helping with the café as well!
Oops! RSR didn't get their homework today. It is attached below and will be handed out on Monday.
Thursday 25th January 2018
This week we started our new topic based on the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Today we brought our bears and other soft toys to school. The toys had a great time playing parachute games, learning about money and they even had a chair designed and made for them out of boxes, lego and construction toys.
The highlight of the day was the Goldilocks Cafe that we had in the classroom. We made porridge, toast and special bear toast. The children enjoyed taking part in different roles from chef, to waiting staff and of course being a customer.
We were very proud of the children and their bear behaved beautifully all day long!

Wow! What an exciting day we've had for Science day. The children learned how to make ice cream in ziplock bags. When they came back to the classroom, the children wrote about making ice cream and remembered what ingridients they put in. Outside- the children played with bubbles. During busy learning, the children looked at Artic animals and could use some of the names for the animals and talk about where they live. Take a look at our photos below...
Thursday 18th January 2018
Forest schools started this week and the children have had a great time exploring, climbing, den building and hunting for insects. We have also been talking about 2D and 3D shapes and have found these in the Reception playground and all around. This is the last week of our winter topic and we have been doing lots of snowman activities in our classrooms. Elsa froze our teddies and we had to work out how we could melt the ice and warm them up. In PE we have been dancing to Winter music.
Thursday 4th January 2018
Happy New Year to you all!
The children came back to school after their break with lots of exciting news. Today we made some new year resolutions and attached them to rockets that we blasted around the playground!
Our new topic is Winter and we enjoyed reading the story 'Lost and Found' about a penguin and a boy who became friends. We have been making plasticine snowmen, collage penguins and we have also been rescuing animals that had been frozen in cubes of ice.
Lots of busy work and we've only been back at school for one day!
Thursday 14th December
A huge WELL DONE to all the Reception children for their excellent Christmas Production! They all worked so hard practising and making costumes and did a great job on stage, dancing, singing and acting.
What a great show!
Monday 11th December
The elves paid us another visit today and this time they left us some presents under the Christmas tree. We were very excited when we opened them to find some remote controlled cars, some beebots and some mobile phone style walkie talkies. We enjoyed playing with them all day and did some great turn taking.
Friday 8th December

We're so sorry for the recent silence on here but we have been so busy in our learning in Reception! Last week, lots of us really enjoyed the Bedtime story workshop and had a great time reading while sipping hot chocolate in our jammies!
We have been really impressed with how well the children have grasped Phase 1 phonics skills such as sound talking and have been putting them to great use with the letter sounds they are learning - the children's reading and writing are coming on brilliantly. Remember to look on Bug club this week.
This week we went on a Hunt to find the cheeky gingerbread man who seemed to be sabotaging our Literacy slides. We followed lots of clues around the school and completed lots of phonic challenges until at last we found him and gobbled him up!
Today we also started making electrical circuits to light up a bulb ready for designing and making our own toys next week- watch this space.
Welcome to our Reception Blog and Twitter feed.

Wow! What lovely days we have had at our farm to fork visit to TESCO Milton this week. First, we went on a coach to TESCO. When we got to TESCO, we had to walk through the store and carefully up the stairs to the staff cafe area. This is where we were able to mould the dough into 2 different shapes. Then, in groups we got to explore the bakery- Alex talked to us about all the different machines and how they worked. We really loved the packaging/ label maker for the different breads! Please take a look at the photos below. A big thank you to TESCO (especially Sandra) and to all the adults/parents who helped with our trip.
Friday 20th October
Wow, you've made it to half term Reception children (and parents!). You have worked so hard and learnt so much already, we are really proud of the progress you have made; you fully deserve a rest this holiday.
This week, we have been busy going on a MONSTER hunt! We scrambled over wibbly, wobbly bridges, we bounced over soft, squidgy cushions and squelched and squerched our way through slippery slime but we still didn't find one......so we made one! The children worked hard to designed their own monster, focusing on how it could be described, and then they made them using junk.
The children have amazed us with their story telling skills this half term, make sure you ask them to retell We're Going on a Bear Hunt. Could you go on a hunt this holiday, perhaps even a spooky one?
Monday 2nd October
Today we started our topic of Bear Hunt and acted out the story. We also made Bear Hunt "small worlds" where we worked really carefully cutting, ripping, rolling and gluing to make each different obstacle along the way. Ask your child if they can tell you the story.
We also started a science experiment about keeping healthy. We are monitoring what happens to bread when it is left. Some bread was touched by all our dirty hands but others we only touched with clean hands- which one will get the most moldy? At home you could practice washing hands really well and perhaps even make up a hand washing song?
Thursday 21st September
This week we agreed our class rules to try to make sure we are happy, healthy learners! We also read the story of The Rainbow Fish and have thinking about how we can be kind in our words and actions. We really enjoyed making our amazing Rainbow fish!
This Saturday 23rd September there is a Working Party to sand and stain the fence around our school garden. It is 9-12 o'clock and there will be refreshments available. Accompanied children are really welcome too- there will be lots of jobs for them. Please come along and join the fun.
Wednesday 13th September
This week the children have started to stay for lunch and we have been so impressed with their healthy eating! We have been practising using our knives and forks. Also this week, we have been discussing our families and drawing lots of pictures of people who are special to us. The children have been working together really well and are settling in to their new routines. We look forward to welcoming them full time next week!
Monday 11th September 2017
Wow! What a busy week in Reception, all the children have now attended Reception and spent at least a morning or afternoon in the classroom. There have been lots of activities for us to try. Last week, we had a wonderful teddy bears picnic with all our parent/carers and our teachers and teaching assistants. Thank you to TESCOS Milton for donating lots of the food and drink and to all the teachers and teaching assistants who prepared the picnic. Everybody was happy and had a lovely time!Take a look at the photos below.
W1st November 2017
This week we have started our new topic of "The Little Red Hen" and we enjoyed making the bread and cakes for our role play bakery. We have been doing lots of counting, adding and weighing in the bakery.
This week we also started learning our letter sounds and have been busy making things that start with the sounds. We have made snakes, astronaut helmets and tickly tarantulas! Tomorrow we are looking forward to making pizzas.
